Memorandum Monday

Hello to Sian and all Monday Bloggers.

Over the weekend I learnt how to make Dorset Posies. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for ages and was prompted by the pictures and instructions in a magazine I was about to give away!
Do you remember when you got chips wrapped in newspaper? You found yourself reading every word on the page? That was me on Friday, thumbing through this magazine that was two years old being captivated by these pretty little sewing projects.
They were such fun to do and after the first one they became quick and easy to put together whilst catching up on the iPlayer or watching a film. I have an idea or three buzzing around my head now…

Dorset Posies are a variation of Dorset Buttons which were stitched by hand in the county of Dorset UK from the early 1600’s to 1851. They were shipped all over the world and were even worn by royalty. This cottage industry employed over 4000 people at its height, making over 100 different Dorset button types, all in white linen. Their popularity died overnight after the Great Exhibition of 1851, when a new button machine was showcased.

Week 9

Continuing my clearing out project it was the turn of one of my food cupboards last week. I ended the day with a rather large bag of oats, nuts, and dried fruit. I had an empty half coconut shell among other small pots and decided to make some food for the birds. Fat duly melted, all the ‘stuff’ chopped, mixed and packed into various containers including the coconut shell and after a night setting hard in the fridge I hung the coconut feast up by the bird table and waited. And waited. And waited and…get the drift?

Then about a week ago I noticed a flash of black and a swinging shell. Again and again, day after day this was happening but as soon as I went anywhere near the window the bird caught my movement and fled!

Today, needing a Snap for Helena, I had my camera out on the table whilst having lunch and watching to see if the coconut started swinging. Yessss! it did. I stood up carefully, hiding behind a cupboard and focused the camera on to the coconut. Low and behold it was the blackbird! Now blackbirds are ground feeders. They don’t really even like bird feeding tables and they certainly don’t hang on to a feeder! What this bird was doing was flying up to the coconut, pushing its beak into the food so that it fell to the floor where he would happily peck away ’till it was gone and then he repeated the exercise over and over until, I presume, he was exhausted!

This weeks Snaps! are linked by the fact that the result of my efforts are out of focus! I put them in a collage for you.

I got a few shots that look like this

And a few looking a lot like this

I did get this too

Hope you liked the strange happenings on and around my bird table.

Thank you Helena

Winter Scavenger Hunt

I have some more items for the lovely scavenger hunt to share with you. the winter Scavenger Hunt is organised by Joy and Eileen.

I have one item yet to find.

Item 1 A robin. At last, thanks to the purchase of some mealworms I managed to catch him.
Item 1 The Robin

Item 7 Berries and/or nuts. I took this back in December. Its the Rowan in my front garden.
Item 7 Berries and/or nuts

Item 8 A wreath. When we were in Greenwich in December a wreath was on my list of items to look out for. This was my favourite one.
Item 8 A wreath

Item 9 A tree that has lost all its leaves It’s lovely to be reminded, looking at this picture, of the fabulous autumn we had.
Item 9 A tree that has lost all its leaves

Item 12 A fancy button. I spent a pleasant half hour rooting through my button box but couldn’t find what I was looking for. Lotta said these were all fancy!
item 12

Item 16 A chimney. I spent days looking for ‘the perfect chimney’ for the hunt. It caused an enormous amount of huffing from the hubs. “what’s wrong with that one?, or that one?, or that one?’ he kept saying. I ignored him and choose these as soon as I saw them. I liked these because I didn’t notice them at first! I mean how could I not? They are so tall and belong to the Greenwich power station. You can also see the O2 arena, tall cranes and buildings. The whole thing just appealed to me.

Thanks to Eileen & Joy for doing a great job again.
