Learn Something New Every Day

Although I have finished my LSNED project I haven’t printed all the pages yet. I was looking for a way to put them altogether, perhaps my ‘Project Life’ album?, Spiral bound with the Bind-it-all? and then I saw Julie Kirks beautiful LSNED folder. She left a link for the blank book and I had my answer. As the folder is suitable for 4 x 6 pages and my LSNED pages are 5 x 7 I looked around for a similar folder to suit my pages. I couldn’t find anything and then got distracted, as you do, and went off to do something else. But I really loved the idea of a folder rather than a binder.

I was putting the breakfast things away and opened up an empty cereal packet for ease of re-cycling and had a Ha Ha! moment.
A few minutes later the now flat cereal packet was measured, cut and stuck I had the beginnings of a folder.

I love it! It was supposed to be a prototype, only just holding together with masking tape. But I really liked it! I taped over the plain masking tape with some Washi tape, decided brads would hold the pockets closed nicely and then wondered for a while how to keep it closed. I didn’t think ribbon ties were quite right.
Later in the day I came across a huge paperclip, problem solved.

Of course I could paint over it or cover it in paper but I won’t, not this time.

What do you think?

Thank you Julie x

My Month in Numbers

I am so enjoying putting together My Month in Numbers. It is a great meme started by Julie Kirk over at Notes on Paper.
I like to choose a photo that figures in my month and put my list on to the picture.
The pages are coming together nicely and will make a fun mini…eventually.

So September came together like this.

Now I know that folks in countries other than the UK might be laughing at my funnel clouds and I don’t mind a bit but they are very rare here and half of our street was out taking pictures and just looking at these. It was the highlight of my week! ☺

Anyone have any idea what happened to September?
October 1st, it is 15 deg here and raining, that means the wretched biting creatures are still here. Haven’t they had enough of me over the weekend? I can see me starting my October numbers with the embarrassingly large number of bites I have! Hey Ho, bring on a fabulous frosty Autumn morning.

Photo Art Friday

Photo Art Friday

Bonnie’s challenge this week is Abstraction(s) from nature.
I had lots of fun with this one. I have noticed so many beautiful abstract patterns in nature this week thanks to this challenge and with a few tweaks with levels, curves and Topaz here are some results.

I don’t know the name of this plant but loved the patterns and the fabulous purple.

I have a new lens, a much longed for 60mm Macro. I am finding it a challenge but am more than happy to keep practising when I see a dragon fly up close and looking at me personal. How beautiful her wings are. I liked the wings in black & white, they seemed to sparkle.

And the beautiful wings of the hover fly. I found it a bit scary when I saw the fly so huge in my lens! It reminded me of our biology lessons at school, Oh so long ago. The boys in our biology class liked nothing better than swapping what the girls were supposed to be looking at for a spider!

I am endlessly fascinated by the beautiful webs made by spiders in the garden. They are even more beautiful after the rain or perhaps the sprinkler? I played a little in Topaz, just for fun.

I also had a play with another way of looking at abstract.

I have loved this challenge and I am sure there will be fabulous interpreteations of Abstraction at Photo Art Friday this week.

Hope you have nice weekends. Maybe we will be dry here in the UK?

Childhood Food Memories

I was reading an article by Anne Widdicombe about her childhood food memories and as I spent a weekend with my brothers recently I thought I would collect some food memories from them.

Like a lot of childhood things the food on the table was taken for granted.
Our mother was Irish, I remember her telling me that food rationing didn’t happen in Dublin and she and her family never ate anything out of a can.
Of course when she came over to England that all changed!

On Friday we always had fish of some kind but our favourite was her tuna fish pie.
I still make it some times as does one of the brothers.

Take a can of tuna in oil, mum used to drain the oil into the bin! I use the oil to make the sauce. Empty the fish into the bottom of a pie dish breaking it up a little. Cook some frozen peas for a few minutes, drain and add them to the dish. Make a white sauce and pour it over the fish & peas. Cook some carrot slices and put them over the top of the sauce, cover with lovely creamy mashed potato and put it in the oven until bubbling and golden.

Soup: always tomato; from a can. My favourite was Cream of Mushroom but I could only have it when I was poorly.
Actually I loved mushrooms but we were never allowed them, they were too expensive.
Irish stew with pearl barley of course. Mum had a huge brown earthenware pot that she put everything in and then cooked the stew in the oven.
Then there was her lovely hot pot that she cooked on top of the stove. She discovered something else that came in a can. Now this is something I will make if one of the brothers comes over because it reminds us all of our childhood, and the boys all love it.

Cut up potato and carrot into large chunks, and onions into quarters. Tip them all into a pan of water; add salt and bring to the boil, turn down the heat and simmer until the potatoes are cooked. Drain off the water and while the pan is still hot add a tin of Marks and Spencer’s Stewed Steak in Gravy. It had to be Marks & Spencer’s she said because it had no fat! (She would add that in a moment.) Stir everything around to break up the potato a little and heat the meat through. Add a huge slice of butter (this was the days before we had cholesterol don’t forget!) and serve with bread and butter.
Still gorgeous, if you’re not veggy and can ignore the health of your arteries for a while.

Junket, what was that??? Dad used to make it.
I remember the tablets but no recollection of any ingredients or method. None of the brothers can remember anything about it. Perhaps it was a bad dream?

I expect someone will tell me?

I bet you were wondering what picture I would put with this post? I saw this whilst looking for something and it brought back a memory for me.

Strong green cabbage! Not everybody’s cup of tea but I absolutely adore it. Many years ago I spent a lot of time driving up and down the motorway to stay with my mother during the week while she had a long spell of poor health. My youngest brother did every weekend. We used to pass each other on a Friday evening.

In the week Mum & I lived on ready meals from M&S and I used to buy, among other vegetables, ready sliced mixed strong greens every day because they are fabulous and good for you and I never bought such a luxury for my self (the ready sliced bit not the greens!).
By about Thursday Mum would say to me “When are you going home Miriam?” I would tell her, very gently, “On Friday afternoon Mum”
With a beautiful twinkle in her eye she would say.”Good, then I can have something other than cabbage with my meal”

Do you have childhood food memories?

A Moment in September

Simply a Moment is a beautiful idea from Alexa at Trimming The Sails to capture a moment in our lives. She has chosen September 15th for the first one which just happens to be our wedding anniversary.

10.15am Friday 15th September 2012.

I can hardly keep my eyes open. 2.00am is not my preferred bed time but we had such a wonderful day yesterday, I want to think about it for a moment and I want to record a Simple Moment inspired by Alexa.
I can hear the traffic this morning: it seems heavier than usual. The sound from the road comes from my right hand side through the open window of Paul’s office. I much prefer the sounds that drift up from my left as I sit here and type next to my open window. Sparrows are chattering away in the ivy, a magpie is shouting the odds at anyone who will listen; the small white dog that lives a few gardens away is barking it’s little head off. Does he want to go in for his breakfast or he is joining in with the magpie chorus.
On the spare bed behind me are the clothes I wore to the wedding yesterday. I felt happy and confident and very me! I was pleased with my choice. My makeup box is still on the bed along with hair straighteners (cold) hairdryer and brushes. The contents of my bag are strewn everywhere. I wonder what I was looking for when we came in? My phone no doubt! My camera is here beside me, I am thinking about what I will see when I have downloaded the pictures.
Beside my camera is the anniversary card Ben gave us. Was it really twenty-eight years ago that we were married? Oh how different and discreet our wedding day was compared to the lavish affair of yesterday. If I close my eyes I can still feel the smooth silk of my jacket and the nerves I felt on that morning. I can feel my hat with its beautiful white marabou feather moving gently with every tilt of my head. I am remembering the table with the oval mirror where I sat and applied my make up and I left everything just where it was before leaving for church just as I did yesterday.
My brother’s face has drifted across my thoughts, he gave me away, he was so young, but then we all were!
I open my eyes and see my lovely husband looking at the gift our son bought us. We have not bought gifts for each other this year, we have too much on our minds just at he moment, but we have the hope of a special gift when the time is right.

The day may have been somewhat different but the vows my niece and her new husband made yesterday were the same as the vows we made this day in 1984.

I will make this into a page for my book. Thank you Alexa.
