How strange… more rose hips.

a lovely memory

I am packing some things up today and found this picture, covered in dust, in a box of ‘stuff’.

My lovely friend Pauline painted it and gave it to me for Christmas1992.

She is no longer with us and I miss her so much. The picture is clean and shiny again and will come with me to the new house.

I love to see rose hips. I love their colour and shape.  In my last garden we had a wild rose (Rosa canina) hedge along the bottom of the garden. The flowers are such a pretty pink but the autumn hips were stunning both in colour and size!
Rose hips = itching powder = a memory from childhood.

a childhood memory

Did you ever break one open and squash it on some poor unsuspecting childs neck? or throw an open one down inside his t-shirt?
Obviously I have only read about such a practice! I was just wondering…

.

Have a look here and here for some lovely (and sensible) things to do with rose hips.

I plant named roses for special people in my life.

A rose for dad

My father knew I did this.

He had cancer and knew his life wouldn’t be prolonged so he asked me if he could choose the rose I planted for him!

I went to the garden centre near to my home. I phoned him, (150 miles away) he was ready with his RHS book of roses and between us, on the phone, we looked at the roses until we found one that he liked the look of and was in stock at the garden centre.

This is it. It is called Remember Me.  He chose it and I brought it home and planted it in his memory, with his knowledge. “There you are”, he said, “always in your garden”.

The rose is in flower in my garden today 8th October 2010. The colour is faded at this time of year; in the summer it is a fabulous copper colour.

Moving on… and so begins the 1st chapter.

Tidy the house for showing.

Chapter one

What this means of course is; strip it of everything that makes it personal. All shelves have been cleared of pictures and ornaments, the window sills are now clear, the work tops in the kitchen are clear except for a few strategically placed bowls. You may know that “Hi, I am Miriam, I have an addiction to bowls” So no problem finding one. No one can find anything. But I like it! I love the space and the light, clear surfaces bring.
Today, I like the feeling of freedom that making the decision to sell has brought me. Watch this space for the days of frustration, stress, & tears that are sure to come.
