I read somewhere to plant peonies near fruit trees because the ants do something helpful…and that happens to be where the former owners of our house planted them. Ours are up and I am anxiously awaiting their blooms!
Eek! There were ants underneath my compost container when I put it out for the bin men this morning! That peony will be wonderful when it is in full bloom. My Grandpa’s favourite and they always remind me of him.
Hi Miriam!
Memories go peonies in the yard when I was a child. But they always fell over. I guess stakes hadn’t been invented yet. HA! Probably were top heavy from too many ants. I love the little bits of color on the white petals waiting to unfurl. xo, m & jb
lovely sharp image – seem to be lots of critters this year – wish there were fewer aphids though!
Growing up, I remember ants on the peonies in our yard. We’ve never had a problem with them here. Our peonies are up, but a long way from blooming.

I’m marvelling at how vividly you have captured them – they must be so tiny in real life

Gorgeous photograph! I love the shallow depth of field.

Me again…Memories OF peonies.
I’m sure the peonies will be lovely when they bloom, despite the ants.
They sure do love peonies!
Ours are just now sprouting their leaves, so it will be a while before we have flowers, but it is always so worth the wait.
Have a wonderful weekend, Miriam!
I had no idea that ants had such a penchant for peonies … I marvel at the crisp detail of your photo.
such a lovely clear image. Hope the peonies bring joy to the garden when they open.
