{"id":12983,"date":"2015-05-21T10:21:28","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T10:21:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk.gridhosted.co.uk\/?p=12983"},"modified":"2015-05-21T10:21:28","modified_gmt":"2015-05-21T10:21:28","slug":"do-something-different-47","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk\/?p=12983","title":{"rendered":"Do Something Different 4\/7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For Dementia Awareness Week<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week (from 17th \u2013 23 May) in the UK it is <a href=\"http:\/\/alzheimers.org.uk\/dementiaawarenessweek\">Dementia Awareness Week<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Some of you will know that I worked for Alzheimer\u2019s society until I retired a couple of years ago.<br \/>\nI would like to acknowledge the work of the society and to contribute to Dementia Awareness Week by posting &#8216;something different for me&#8217;: a short sketch each day called <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll in a days work\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are not remembered stories but real events I wrote up a long time ago right after the visit\/phone call.<br \/>\nAs support workers we had excellent support in the office but on the rare occasion I couldn\u2019t get there after I finished a visit or I was alone in the office I used to write down my thoughts and feelings and let the paper listen.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>For her own health and safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I don\u2019t forget to eat, I cook for myself every day!  She flew at me.<br \/>\nOoops, wrong tone in my question, so easily done.<br \/>\n\u201cYesterday I cooked a chicken and roast potatoes and some vegetable just the way I have always done.\u201d She said almost crossly.<br \/>\n\u201cOh that\u2019s wonderful\u201d I said, \u201cI love to cook for my family but don\u2019t always have the time now that I work\u201d. \u201cMay I have a glass of water?\u201d I ask the lady of the house.<br \/>\n\u201cOf course my dear\u201d she says so sweetly as she gets to her feet and heads to the kitchen.<br \/>\nI follow her, and as I step through the door I notice the most enormous dead plant resting in the sink.<br \/>\nIt has been the only occupant of that place in many a week by the looks of things.<br \/>\n\u201cOh we have plants in common too\u201d I exclaim. \u201cIs this chap having a holiday?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI do this too, I pop them in the sink while I go to work, it\u2019s a bit like self watering\u201d I laugh and my lady laughs too.<br \/>\nI look around the room.<br \/>\nIt has been many months since any food has been prepared here and many weeks since any of the cups on the side have been washed in this sink.<br \/>\nWe talk about the plants, their names, their likes and dislikes until my request for water has been forgotten.<br \/>\nI leave with the promise to return again to help with the watering and pruning. <\/p>\n<p>(After I have made a few phone calls of course).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk.gridhosted.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/forgetmenot-little-things.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk.gridhosted.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/forgetmenot-little-things.jpg\" alt=\"forgetmenot-little-things\" width=\"1024\" height=\"716\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/forgetmenot-little-things.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/forgetmenot-little-things-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/miriamrogers.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/forgetmenot-little-things-429x300.jpg 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/remembertheperson\">Remember the person<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For Dementia Awareness Week This week (from 17th \u2013 23 May) in the UK it is Dementia Awareness Week.
